In the vast expanse of the Xiaojin county of Sichuan province lies a 450-sq-km mystic place, little known to the outside world. What is remarkable is that within a distance of 3.5 kilometres from three valleys stand four consecutive mountain peaks. They are what the locals call Mount Four Sisters, or Siguniangshan.

四 姑 娘 山 ， 藏 名 “ 石 骨 拉 柔 達 ” ， 意 思 是 大 神 山 。 當 地 方 言 叫 “ 四 鼓 勒 ” ， 與 漢 語 “ 四 姑 娘 ” 相 近 ， 故 通 叫 四 姑 娘 山 。 這 個 名 稱 的 得 來 ， 也 與 當 地 古 老 的 傳 說 有 關 。 相 傳 由 南 方 遙 遠 的 地 方 來 的 四 位 同 胞 姐 妹 ， 為 了 拯 救 當 地 被 刮 寒 風 的 妖 魔 坑 害 的 窮 苦 百 姓 ， 化 作 四 座 山 峰 ， 擋 住 了 北 來 的 寒 流 ， 使 得 這 一 帶 山 谷 氣 候 變 暖 ， 陽 光 明 媚 ， 糧 食 蔬 果 ， 年 年 丰 收 。 住 在 這 一 帶 的 藏 、 羌 、 漢 、 回 各 族 人 民 ， 為 了 紀 念 四 位 姑 娘 ， 便 把 她 們 化 成 的 四 座 山 峰 叫 “ 四 姑 娘 山 ” 。 它 屬 于 橫 斷 山 脈 的 邛 崍 山 系 ， 主 峰 海 拔 6 , 2 5 0 米 ， 其 余 三 峰 海 拔 5 , 5 0 0 米 左 右 ， 僅 次 于 四 川 省 內 最 高 的 貢 嘎 （ 海 拔 7 , 5 5 6 米 ） 。
Mt. Four Sisters gets its name from a famous local legend. It is said that the place was once hard-hit by chilling winds from the north, which devastated the livelihoods of the locals. One day, four ladies, who were sisters from some remote southern region, transformed themselves into four mountains in order to shield the place from the attack of the northerlies. The area then became warm and sunlit, with rich harvests of grains and fruits. In honour of the four sisters' great deed, the locals named the mountains after them.
Mt. Four Sisters is part of the Qionglai mountains. The highest peak has an altitude of 6,250 metres, and the other three peaks stand at 5,500 metres.
從 省 城 成 都 到 四 姑 娘 山 的 最 佳 路 線 是 經 都 江 堰 和 臥 龍 ， 全 程 約 2 3 0 公 里 ， 中 途 最 為 艱 險 的 路 段 當 數 花 四 、 五 個 小 時 翻 越 海 拔 在 4 , 8 5 0 米 左 右 巴 郎 山 。 它 雄 踞 于 進 出 小 金 縣 的 隘 口 通 道 ， 因 地 質 構 造 和 地 殼 的 造 山 運 動 ， 時 有 塌 方 和 泥 石 流 ﹔ 又 因 海 拔 在 雪 線 以 上 ， 終 年 積 雪 ， 氣 候 多 變 。
The whole journey to Mt. Four Sisters from Chengdu in Sichuan province measures 230 km. The neck-breaking part of it is surmounting the 4,850-metre-high Balang Mountain, which takes as many as 4 to 6 hours to accomplish.

顛 簸 懵 懂 間 ， 當 千 里 之 外 而 來 的 我 們 站 在 巴 郎 山 山 口 （ 海 拔 4 , 4 8 7 米 ） ， 向 前 遠 望 ， 一 覽 眾 山 小 是 什 么 樣 的 感 覺 才 真 正 體 會 到 。 同 行 的 人 在 猜 測 披 銀 挂 紗 的 群 山 中 哪 位 是 大 姑 娘 ， 哪 位 是 二 姑 娘 ， 可 就 連 成 都 的 司 機 都 是 頭 一 次 來 ， 自 然 無 法 斷 定 四 處 山 峰 的 位 置 。 的 確 ， 四 姑 娘 山 較 之 于 海 螺 溝 、 九 寨 溝 、 黃 龍 寺 、 三 峽 、 峨 嵋 山 等 四 川 境 內 早 已 舉 世 聞 名 的 風 景 名 勝 區 而 言 ， 其 知 名 度 并 不 高 ， 正 因 為 如 此 ， 親 身 前 往 考 察 ， 收 集 丰 富 的 形 象 資 料 就 顯 得 尤 為 重 要 ， 這 正 是 我 們 此 行 的 目 的 。

Balang Mountain arrogantly stands in the gateway to Xiaojin. Constant geological crumblings and rock-mud flows have created various natural formations. Since its summit is far above the snow line, Balang is covered with snow all year round, and the weather is fickle. When we climb all the way to the mountain's top and cast our gaze as far as we can, we come to the true feeling that all other mountains are mere miniatures.
None of us knows exactly where Mt. Four Sisters is, not even the tour guide from Chengdu. The mountain is not well known in China, hence, making a comprehensive quest to the heart of it is the ultimate goal of this trip.

緊 接 著 ， 第 二 件 頭 痛 事 又 來 了 ﹔ 日 隆 這 兒 沒 有 加 油 站 ！ 我 們 的 車 上 沒 有 油 桶 ， 油 箱 里 的 汽 油 又 只 夠 跑 四 十 多 公 里 路 ， 據 說 雙 橋 溝 、 長 坪 溝 的 路 程 有 几 十 公 里 ， 怎 么 辦 ？ 事 實 上 ， 在 四 姑 娘 山 的 几 天 時 間 里 ， 我 們 天 天 都 在 向 每 一 輛 遇 到 的 車 子 高 價 買 油 ， 就 是 高 價 ， 也 不 一 定 能 買 到 ， 誰 的 油 都 是 寶 貴 的 ， 在 高 原 山 區 ， 汽 車 耗 油 大 是 驚 人 的 。

出 師 不 利 的 陰 霾 ， 被 第 二 天 如 詩 似 畫 的 雙 橋 溝 景 致 沖 得 一 干 二 淨 。 雙 橋 溝 從 溝 口 到 溝 底 ， 縱 深 近 4 0 公 里 。 初 入 溝 谷 ， 四 面 懸 崖 陡 立 ， 溝 外 朝 陽 燦 爛 ， 溝 里 陰 森 幽 暗 ， 除 了 由 溝 里 上 源 湍 湍 不 息 流 下 的 溪 水 在 嘩 嘩 作 響 外 ， 一 切 都 死 一 般 的 沉 寂 ， 難 怪 這 段 溝 口 崖 谷 有 “ 陰 陽 谷 ” 的 稱 謂 呢 。 沒 走 几 公 里 ， 促 狹 寂 暗 的 世 界 前 方 ， 漸 漸 開 朗 、 光 亮 了 起 來 ， 道 路 曲 折 間 ， 不 覺 進 入 了 谷 地 的 寬 闊 地 帶 。 十 月 是 秋 的 季 節 ， 大 自 然 的 色 彩 在 這 個 季 節 里 由 嬌 媚 、 妖 冶 而 達 到 燦 爛 的 華 彩 境 地 。
We are completely moved by the scenery at the Double Bridge Valley, or Shuangqiaogou, halfway to the legendary Mt. Four Sisters.
The valley has a horizontal length measuring 40 km. The near end of the valley is flanked by steep overhanging cliffs. The dismal darkness of the inside of the valley poses a sharp contrast with the blinding brightness outside. The sepulchral silence is pierced intermittently by the splashing, cascading streamlets. No wonder this part of the valley has the nickname, "The Valley of Spirits."

血 脈 。 這 里 的 山 峰 、 森 林 、 草 甸 、 溪 流 、 冰 川 、 瀑 布 、 似 乎 絕 少
有 人 跡 的 梳 理 ， 所 有 的 一 切 都 聽 命 于 自 然 的 安 排 ， 遵 從 其 各 自 的
規 律 ， 用 恣 肆 和 放 任 于 人 為 之 外 來 形 容 是 毫 不 過 分 。 即 便 是 人 參
果 坪 附 近 居 住 的 屈 指 可 數 的 几 戶 人 家 ， 其 建 筑 材 料 和 風 格 也 鮮 明
地 體 現 出 其 與 周 邊 環 境 的 協 調 ： 要 么 用 石 塊 壘 筑 ， 要 么 以 原 木 搭
就 ， 充 滿 了 朴 實 與 野 逸 。
After walking for several kilometres along winding paths, the silent and dark narrowness gradually opens up and light slips through. The zigzags lead us finally to the open area of the valley. In the autumn month of October, nature lavishly unfolds its splendour. It mantles every bit, from the valley bottom all the way up to the summit, with a palette of crimson, orange yellow, deep brown, vivid purple, sapphire blue, and blackish green. All the peaks, trees, grasslands, streams, and water drops are completely bared in their natural being, untouched and unspoiled by man. Though inhabited by a few families, the architectural styles of their houses are in complete harmony with the surroundings.
穿 過 那 一 雙 雙 好 奇 和 探 究 的 目 光 ， 不 難 領 悟 到 大 自 然 給 予 他 們 的 限 制 和 他 們 的 兩 種 相 悖 又 不 可 相 離 的 力 量 ， 是 如 何 交 織 在 他 們 的 生 活 世 界 里 的 。 一 聲 招 呼 ， 一 只 香 煙 ， 便 可 以 縮 短 不 同 空 間 里 生 活 的 人 在 心 理 上 的 距 離 ， 做 向 導 ？ 沒 問 題 ， 跟 我 來 。
A greeting or a cigarette can immediately break the ice between the visitors and the locals, and make them friends. "You need a guide? No problem. Follow me."

站 在 人 參 果 坪 西 邊 的 山 坡 上 ， 自 告 奮 勇 的 老 鄉 會 指 著 河 谷 東 邊 群 山 之 上 的 雪 峰 說 ， 那 是 五 色 山 。 強 烈 的 造 山 運 動 而 隆 起 的 呈 上 月 牙 形 的 層 層 岩 石 崖 壁 ， 即 便 是 終 年 不 化 的 積 雪 ， 也 不 能 遮 蓋 住 它 出 于 自 然 的 美 麗 色 澤 。 五 色 山 ， 宛 若 海 底 的 五 彩 螺 母 ， 被 天 翁 鑲 嵌 在 燦 爛 金 黃 群 山 之 上 ， 它 背 負 藍 天 ， 吐 納 白 云 ， 似 海 與 天 的 空 間 倒 錯 和 拼 接 ， 其 神 工 鬼 斧 之 處 ， 實 不 可 言 。
Pointing to the snow-covered peak on the east side of the valley, the volunteer villager tells us that it is Mount Five Colours, or Wuseshan. The cliffs and the various rock formations display their natural beauty, despite the perennial snow. Mount Five Colours, just like a coloured seashell, is inlaid against the blue skies overhead, and encircled by fleecy clouds. The positions of seas and skies seem to have been reversed, or perhaps the two have become integrated.

沿 溪 水 逆 流 而 上 十 余 公 里 ， 便 是 攆 魚 壩 景 區 。 河 谷 兩 旁 自 北 而 南 的 山 系 在 這 兒 坡 度 變 得 平 緩 ， 溪 水 高 亢 的 嘩 嘩 聲 也 減 弱 成 叮 咚 的 吟 唱 。 掬 一 捧 清 涼 的 溪 水 洗 去 臉 上 淋 漓 的 汗 漬 ， 頭 枕 自 然 倒 塌 的 朽 木 ， 擺 平 酸 疼 麻 木 的 四 肢 ， 我 覺 得 從 未 有 過 的 舒 坦 從 地 的 深 處 油 然 生 發 。 人 們 自 古 就 把 大 地 視 為 生 生 不 息 的 母 親 ， 她 總 是 那 么 遼 闊 、 博 大 、 厚 實 而 堅 強 ， 她 滋 養 出 不 息 的 生 命 ， 也 承 受 著 生 命 的 重 壓 。 平 實 的 道 理 ， 這 時 品 味 一 番 ， 其 感 觸 真 不 啻 思 接 千 載 、 視 通 萬 里 呵 。
Walking a dozen kilometres upstream, we arrive at the Fishing Bay. After washing my face with stream water, I lie down, stretching my tired arms and legs, using a rotten tree stump as the pillow. I have never felt more secure and comfortable. To the Chinese, the earth has always been the mother of a myriad. She breeds lives. She is extensive and solid. Only now that I can feel this plain truth, I let myself be submerged in her majestic arms.
透 過 河 對 面 一 排 排 亭 亭 而 立 的 云 杉 和 冷 杉 的 樹 梢 ， 金 字 塔 般 雄 奇 險 峻 的 尖 山 子 靜 靜 的 等 待 著 我 們 目 光 的 接 觸 與 愛 撫 。 在 人 參 果 坪 時 ， 還 顯 不 出 它 這 般 奇 特 而 完 整 的 身 姿 ， 換 一 個 位 置 ， 從 攆 魚 壩 這 個 角 度 審 視 它 ， 則 神 形 具 佳 ， 古 人 觀 山 水 的 散 點 透 視 法 則 中 ， 山 形 步 步 移 一 則 ， 此 時 正 是 佐 証 。

高 高 的 杉 樹 和 樺 樹 已 經 把 自 己 的 影 子 長 長 地 投 射 到 正 北 柔 柔 軟 軟 的 金 黃 的 草 地 上 ， 鋪 展 報 紙 ， 掏 出 午 餐 肉 和 “ 康 師 傅 ” 牌 的 方 便 碗 面 ， 泡 上 熱 開 水 ， 大 伙 兒 都 說 好 久 沒 有 吃 過 這 么 有 情 趣 的 飯 了 。 正 午 的 天 空 瓦 藍 瓦 藍 的 ， 清 晨 涌 動 的 云 氣 這 時 似 乎 也 有 些 疲 憊 ， 放 慢 了 變 幻 的 節 奏 和 速 度 ， 只 是 一 味 地 輕 盈 而 纏 綿 ， 不 愿 邁 步 一 下 。 天 翁 慵 懶 ， 人 可 不 敢 ， 還 有 很 長 的 路 要 趕 ， 否 則 錯 過 了 好 時 辰 和 光 線 ， 悔 之 晚 矣 。 為 節 省 汽 油 以 便 能 晚 上 回 到 日 隆 鎮 ， 我 們 只 好 身 背 數 十 斤 重 的 攝 影 器 材 ， 徒 步 趕 路 。 走 走 停 停 ， 几 番 休 息 之 后 ， 老 鷹 岩 景 區 進 入 了 我 們 的 視 線 。

Tall spruce trees cast their long shadows onto the soft grasses. We take out our instant foods, and everyone says it is a very enjoyable meal. The skies at noon are blue, while the clouds and vapours that have been rolling through the mountains during the morning seem a little bit tired now, and stop changing their shapes. However, we cannot afford to stop for too long, as we cannot let go of the precious moment, or the right kind of light for taking pictures.
In order to save fuel for our return trip, we begin to go on foot, carrying heavy loads of photographic equipment. After strenuous walking, punctuated by several rests, we finally arrive at the Eagle Rock.
藍 天 中 萬 仞 峭 壁 之 上 、 千 層 疊 雪 之 巔 ， 有 一 巨 石 向 東 南 突 兀 而 出 ， 筆 直 挺 拔 的 石 尖 ， 宛 如 銳 利 無 比 的 鷹 嘴 ， 而 整 座 山 峰 則 在 我 的 頭 腦 里 幻 化 成 羽 翼 丰 滿 的 鷹 的 軀 體 ， 它 匍 匐 蹲 臥 ， 正 伺 機 伸 展 碩 大 無 比 的 翅 膀 ， 騰 躍 而 起 ， 扑 向 盯 中 的 獵 食 ， 老 鷹 岩 ， 多 么 擬 人 的 名 字 。
At the top of some snow-covered peaks and cliffs, a huge protruding stone catches my eye. Its peak looks exactly like an eagle's beak, while the rest of the mountain is a richly feathered aquiline body. The eagle is just about to soar up and then pounce upon its prey.

視 線 往 下 瀏 覽 ， 便 是 金 黃 和 墨 綠 相 互 交 融 的 色 彩 樂 章 ， 它 們 彼 此 親 吻 著 ， 由 遠 而 近 ， 來 到 了 我 們 視 線 的 近 處 ， 變 成 了 一 株 披 挂 著 千 年 燦 爛 鬢 發 的 黃 杉 樹 ， 倚 跨 在 歡 騰 的 溪 水 之 上 ， 雖 老 但 卻 充 滿 著 對 生 的 渴 望 ， 它 的 上 半 部 竟 然 頑 強 地 向 上 生 長 ， 追 尋 著 陽 光 的 滋 養 ， 在 這 樣 動 人 的 景 象 前 ， 我 們 感 慨 萬 千 ， 植 物 身 處 逆 境 尚 能 渴 望 生 命 的 延 續 ， 況 乎 人 哉 ！ 生 命 是 美 好 的 ， 植 物 如 此 ， 人 類 更 是 如 此 ， 不 管 遇 到 何 種 困 難 ， 當 頑 強 自 立 ， 不 可 輕 易 折 腰 。
駐 足 良 久 ， 不 覺 日 挂 西 山 ， 舉 首 前 瞻 ， 自 左 而 右 群 峰 毗 連 ， 依 次 為 阿 妣 山 、 野 人 峰 和 牛 心 山 ， 座 座 都 在 4 , 5 0 0 米 海 拔 之 上 ， 首 尾 組 成 一 道 銀 白 的 玉 屏 ， 擋 住 了 我 們 探 究 的 視 線 ， 留 下 耐 人 尋 味 的 想 象 空 間 。
